Omo Valley Tribes

Declared a Unesco World Heritage site, the Lower Omo Valley region has been home to humans for over 2.5 million years. It is literally the epicenter of the cradle of mankind. Today dozens of tribes still inhabit this arid land such has the Hamar, who are seen dancing in their traditional dress for a wedding ceremony.

Simien Mountains

You don’t think of Ethiopia as mountainous but the Northern Highlands surely are. If you want an opportunity to trek and see unique animals, it’s not to be missed. I spent 4 day in the Simien Mountains, arranged with a local guide, scout, and accommodations in villages. You can also visit this Unesco World Heritage site as a daytrip if you’re short on time. Wildlife includes the walia ibex which is found nowhere else in the world, the iconic Ethiopian wolf (the only wolf in Africa) and the gelada monkey, as well as a wealth of bird species.

The Blue Nile

One of two sources of the Nile river begins in Ethiopia, the longest river in the world and life source for tens of millions in Northeast Africa. And while the falls themselves are not as impressive as they once were due to a hydroelectric project, what the waterfall lacks in flow, it makes up for in legend. Visit during September when the water levels are highest.

Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

Ethiopia contains some of the oldest places of Christian worship anywhere in the world. The most impressive being the nearly 200 rock-hewn churches. The best place in the country to see them are the pilgrimage site in the town of Lalibela. Experiencing these 13th Century hand carved monolithic churches in person will blow your mind!
